Studierenden Tage: Data analysis with Mathematica

Ulrich Schmidt

Date: Blockkurs Mo 23.03.2026 - Fr 27.03.2026, 13:30 - 16:30 o'clock
Room: CIP Pool INF 227 1.401

Important note: You can obtain a Mathematica license for your private notebook/PC from the URZ (Link). Please take care of this in good time. Use your “official” university email address for the license registration. No license keys may be sent to non-university email addresses.

Goal: After completing this course, you should be able to use Mathematica to perform (almost) all data analysis tasks required for internships, bachelor's and master's theses involving small-scale experiments. The course corresponds to module UKBI3 in the bachelor's module handbook, and participants receive 1 LP.

Content: Very practical guide to data analysis using examples and exercises. The material is roughly divided into three sections: :
- Arithmetic operations applied to data sets and graphical representation of data sets: Mathematica internal representation of data sets; calculation of data sets derived from data sets with errors (error propagation); graphical representation of one-dimensional and two-dimensional data sets; application of filters.
- import and export of data sets:
Import/export of data from data acquisition systems and various applications (Excel format, HDF format, ASCI format, etc.).
- Fitting functions to data sets and testing hypotheses :
Chi-square minimization for one-dimensional linear/nonlinear fit functions, Consideration of errors in both dimensions (X/Y errors) and Multidimensional data sets.

Advice: Plan at least 2 to 3 hours per course day for preparation, follow-up work, and completing the exercises.

Prerequisite:
It is very helpful if you have already performed (very) simple calculations with Mathematica. Here is a notebook for your first steps with Mathematica and one for more advanced users.
