Summary of telephone conference 8.6. 11:15 participants: Marek Szekowski, Leszek Hajduk, Jan Spelt, Henk,Sebastian Bachmann, F. Eisele ================================================================ 1. next meetings: the next technical meeting will take place at Heidelberg monday july 12 , starting 14:00, followed by the PRR next day. Henk will not be able to participate. PRR at Warsaw: July 20 , starting at 9:00, end before 16:00. participation from outside: Jan and Antonio from NIKHEf., F. Eisele. 2. module production status: Warsaw: 4th module finished, 5. module started (50% wired). They run out of panels next week and also they are missing plastic spacers. a) the panels (50 S1U) will leave NIKHEF tomorrow to arrive on friday, the box will also contain straws, coresponding number of endpieces and twisters and gaspipes and labels for the panels. b) plastic spacers: next spacers promised so far only end of June -- this would stop production at Warsaw. F.E. will check with Jurek if a few spacers can be made earlier. c) new crimping heads have not yet arrived. Box from HD with sniffler, pressure gauge and readout board is at the institute. NIKHEF: straw production has restarted seriously. They suffer from instabilities in cutting and crimping heads--will be slowly improved. Glueing of panels is done using distributed weight on the panels and distributing glue+bubbles over the whole surface. Even bendt panels are reliably glued this way. Production is presently slowed down by instruction of new people.6.th module has been started. Aim: get 1 module every 6 days up to summer holidays. Speed up afterwards. Heidelberg: 1. Production module finished, it was gas tight from the beginning. Also HV status fine except two straws which show a short. 2. production module in construction. Aim was to finish it within 6 working days.First panel went very well. The second panel showed an unexpected problem: some straws were glued to the template and had to be repaired. The reason are glue strips which were definitely much wider than normal e.g. an excessive amount of glue was put locally. This can be surely avoided in future. But it will take 7 days to finish this module. prototype module: final HV tests are done also bending the panel. Results will be presented soon. It looks that we have enough HV safety. next steps: a) check gas flow and gas exchange in long panel b) continue production with 1 module every 6 days. 3. technicalities: glueing of straws: HD and Warsaw are very content with the glueing using glue + colloidal silica. NIKHEF sees no reason at present to change their glueing procedure. ===> this issue will be rediscussed at the HD meeting crimping of tounges: the crimping head (repaired) arrived at NIKHEF and was tested successfully. As soon as new endblocks arrive ( latests next week?) they will switch to crimping. Antonio was asked to order crimping heads for HD and Warsaw. No time scale yet. Check of panels from Crakow: the S1U panels were checked on a random basis. They look ok, maximum bending observed was 100 micron. The plastic inserts have oval pin holes which are too wide by at least 100 micron ===> to be checked at Crakow. Copies of data sheets will be sendt. next time they will be in the transport boxes. Transport boxes and packing looks ok. Boxes are now painted inside to avoid dust. 4. material: we miss plastic spacers and gas pipes. ==> HD will check delivery of gas pipes by other company (which was used for HERAB). ==> Antonio is asked to place the full order of capton XC and composite as soon as possible in one batch. We cannot risk further delivery shortages. The status of capton XC for 10000 straws is unknown. 5. other .. Leszek asks for final drawings for the S3 panels -- they want ot prepare production. ==>Henk promises to recheck and release then final drawings soon. Marek reminds on the unsolved problem of closing the farady cage at the plastic insert side. ==> F.E. promises to moderate a n acceptabel solution fast. ----------------------------- next conference: tuesday july 15, 11:15. 8.6. F.E. ===============================================================================Summary of telephone conference from june 16/04 participants: Jan Spelt, Henk Schujlenburg, Marek Szekowski, Sebastian Bachmann, F. Eisele. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1. status production: warsaw: they close the box of the 5th module today and have started wiring the first panel of module 6. They prepare for gas tightness tests and HV and source measurements of all modules. The equipment from Heidelberg for these tests has arrived. material: the 50 S1U panels have arrived in time together with straws. they will use up the last plastic spacer this week. --> Jurek promised to finish a few plastic spacers this week (>=3) and send them directly to Warsaw. They should then arrive begin of next week. Heidelberg: HD closed the second series module which also was tight immediately. The first panel of module 3 has been glued without problem, There was no glueing of straws to the template. What is needed is a good control of ther amount of glue in a strip and if too much glue was put accidentially then it has to be distributed over the surface before glueing. The second module was done within the 6 day working plan without problem. So series production with the speed of 1 module every 6 working days is possible safely and has started. Tests: there is one worrying fact from tests: we measure a rather high water content in the counting gas starting at 2000 ppm which does not go down in several days of flushing below 500 ppm. The modules are sufficiently tight nevertheless ---> to be further understood.NIKHEF has not yet measured the water content yet but plans to do so now. material: HD is runnig out of straws end of week --> Jan will send straws on thursday to arrive at HD on friday this week. NIKHEF: NIKHef has finished module 6. First panel of module 7 is presently wired. Straw production still has problems because the straw assembly machine shows problems like deadjustment of cutting knifes, crimping heads ... further improvements are needed. Glueing ist still done filling the whole panel area, with results which Jan does not find satisfactory. glueing with silicon colloid using a dispenser: HD uses 60 ccm of glue volume for one panel ( about 70 grams) 2. tooling crimping heads for tounges: One head is available at NIKHEF and is presently tuned to be used in straw assembly. New endblocks (10000) have been produced at Phillips for the use of the crimping tounges. They are expected every day. Two crimping heads have been ordered for HD and Warsaw. They should come this week according to Antonio. HV tester: after the tests at NIKHEF a few modifications were agreed on: changes in software, input protection by diodes and bridges for input connections with jumpers. Three boxes are available and should be ready within 2 weeks from now. Marek forsees to bring along a tester to the Heidelberg meeting july 12. 3. material: the delivery of capton XC is still not known. Accordig to Antonio he has ordered Capton XC for 20000 straws ( which is what we will need this year). Export needs approval by the ministery. Lamina promised to produce straws as soon as the material arrives. ===> we might run out of straws middle of july which would stop production! stainless steel gas pipes: we run out of gas pipes. F.E. has found the company which delivered all the gas pipes for HERAB. They have a large amount of suitable pipes on stock ( 4mm diameter, thickness of wall 0.5 mm. They are willing to make a second cleaning for us to make them free of grease. ===> data , adress and phone numbers given to HENK, up to NIKHEF to pace an order for large amounts. ==> F.E. has ordered 24 meters at the company yesterday , delivery promised for june 18 to overcome a possible shortage. 4. panels: panel production was stopped 1. of june in Crakow because of new tax conditions . According to Jurek he needs an amendment to the contract which makes him the exporter of the panels. Antonio sees no problem to make such an amendment within 2 days. So hopefully production can restart latest july 1st. Check of F-panels: checking at NIKHEF on a random basis will start on thursday 2 Boxes of F-panels will be sendt to heidelberg prior to checking-- HD will do random checks. 5. technical questions: - drawings for S3 panels are not yet ready, Henk is working on it. - the support bars for S3 are ready but not yet shipped. - the template for S1L is ordered by NIKHEF. Delivery promised for september ===> to be checked.Do we need also a new template for S3??? we forsee starting building S3 modules in fall. Faraday cage: there is agreement how to close the Faraday cage at the short end near the beam pipe. F.E. will send a new drawing. 6. we have to work on an overall production schedule which shows which short modules are needed when for assemly of half stations at CERN. ===> try to make overall schedule for next technical meeting july 12, at Heidelberg (HENK) -------------------- next telephone conference: tuesday june 22.6.04 11:15 16.6. F.E. ============================================================================= Summary of telephone conference tuesday 23.6.04 participants: Jan Spelt, Niels Tuning, Gras van Appeldoorn,Marek Szekowski, Jurek Michalowski (part time), S. Bachmann, F. Eisele, U. Uwer ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. production at Cracow plastic spacers: production has been stopped because there is an open question concerning the thickness of the insert. It was 10.7 mm on the drawing but according to Henk it should eventually be increased to 10.9 to match the thickness of the Al spacers. ===conclusions: a) Jurek will produce a very small number fast and send it to Warsaw in order to allow continued production b) It has to be checked with Henk and Antonio how to proceed with the matter for the full order. status 23.4: after contact with Henk and E-mail exchanges: a) Henk is not sure that we need the enhanced thickness b) if needed Antonio agrees to cover the extra expenses for increasing the thickness of the spacers by Jurek c) Henk promised to give Jurek a definite answer today (23.4.) S3 panels: Jurek wants to know when the drawings are ready. According to Henk he still needs some time ( no indication how long) because he has first to finish the station design and C-frame. panel production stop: there seems to be agreement how to proceed between Nikhef and Crakow - Jurek is now working on the formal steps to make him the exporter of the panels. 2. material provision a) capton XC: delivery date to Lamina still not known HD will run out of straws end of july. b) gas pipes: delivery source was found . Henk will work on the order now. Heidelberg has 24 m in hand: ==> tubes for 4 modules will be sendt to Warsaw tomorrow. c) no progress yet on plastic tubes for short modules d) wire: wire consumption is higher than planned (about 1 roll per F-module) most likely we have to order more wire but the stock is large at the moment. ==> Jan will send a few rolls to Heidelberg now (only 2 rolls left). e) we have to store series modules: Henk is asked to send a Fax of his transport box scetches to HD. 3. production: Warsaw: module 6 finished, module 7 started the test equipment for gas and HV tests is now nearly ready, so test will start soon. Heidelberg: Series module # 3 finished within 5 working days. Module is tight and required exchange of 2 wires. First panel of module 4 wired. The production plan is now changed to 5 working days /module e.g. 1 module /week. Bottleneck is straw preparation because there are continuous problems with cutting the toungue. This part is not yet robust enough.Similar problems are reported by Jan. Heidelberg changed now to the NIKHEF method of contacting the side walls via Al strips.Test results are all satisfactory. NIKHEF: Module 7 in progress . Module 6 was not gas tight and had to be fixed in the PC region. Production is now stabilising in rate. Production plans: production plans will be exchanged between the labs within 1 week based on solid experience. 4. tests: a) water content: Gras has measured water in the outlet of a module and finds also enhanced values. He beleives however that this is just the drying of capton in the module. In the meantime Sebastian has used our measurements of water content in the outlet of a module versus time to estimate that the module contains about 4 l of H2O (gas) assuming no leaks. This matches with the calculation of water content in the capton (2%) based on data sheets ===> there is probably no problem , we just have to be patient. b) Niels Tuning had distributed a summary of measurements from NIKHEF. The occurence of current spikes in modules and slow discharges in the endblock area is worrisome and has to be further explored. This may show a weakness of our design. Ulli Uwer and Niels will keep contact and eventually organise a special phone conference to discuss this issue and agree on further test procedures. -------------------------- F.E. 23.6. next conference tuesday 29.6.04 11:15 =========================================================================== Summary of telephone conference 29.6.04 participants: Leszel Hajduk (part time) , Henk Schujlenburg, Marek Szekowski, F. Eisele, S. bachmann, U. Uwer ----------------------------------------------------------------- 1. material Henk proposes to use short nylon tubes as outlets for the short modules near the beam pipe. These can be glued with araldite. The connection between upper and lower modules will then be made by flexible polyurethan tubes. Henk will provide suitable nylon tubes (on roll) to Warsaw. stainless steel gas tubes: Henk is going to order SS tubes now with industrial cleaning. He also will ask to cut the pipes in pieces of 25 cm length for easier transport. Warsaw and Heidelberg will need these tubes within 3 weeks. --> Its forseen that a sufficent amount is brought along to the HD meeting by Jan. endblocks: new modified endblocks (10000) + 20000 twisters have arrived at NIKHEF plastic spacers: Warsaw received 1 spacer which will be used this week. Jurek will send 3 more spacers latest friday this week to Warsaw. Delivery of a large quantity to NIKHEF is not yet scheduled --> Leszek has to chcek with Jurek. straws: no news concerning capton delivery yet. All places have straws for 4 to 5 modules left-- so production of straws will stop in 3 weeks from now.. Marek asks for early informatin because he may have to readjust the holiday planning of his technicians.--> we agree that we wait for 1 more week hoping that we will get then a definite answer on capton delivery to LAMINA. glue dispendser tips: HD will provide more tips to Warsaw... some amount can probably be taken along at the HD meeting. panels: Crakow is waiting for the final signed addendum from NIKHEF. 2. drawings: a) final drawings of short modules esp. S3: They will be finished before HENK goes to holidays e.g. within 10 days. 3. status of production: WARSAW: module 6 finished, module 7 started. gas tests of all modules: all are leaking along the side walls. They will be sealed buy adding a glue strip along the side wall. The origin of the problem is probably a damage of the Al side strips when removing the glue --> leakage of gas via panel. Closing of Faraday Cage: this is discussed again, HD has switched to soldering Al strips to the side panels at the edges of the side strips , NIKHEF solders a long strip in the middle. ==> Sebastian will send a small scetch of the soldering procedure of HD. Its up to Warsaw then to decide which method they want to use. NIKHEF: Module 7 finished, start wiring module 8. Henk does not know if the crimping of toungs is already used -- probably not --> Jan should keep us informed. Heidelberg: series module 4 finished, wiring of module 5 started. No problems except preparation of straws, which still gives problems because cutting of tounges is unreliable and needs frequent readjustments. --> the number of shifts for making straws will be increased to 3/day in order to get a reserve of straws. (subject to the availability of straws of course). 4. organisation: F.E. asks to update the list of materials available on stock. What is on the WEB is completely outdated. ==> he needs information from Jan or Jan should make it available on the WEB himself. Production Plans: It was agreed to produce production plans at every site . So far only HD has delivered. ================================== next conference: 6.7.04 11:15. F.E.
